"Why do you love me?" or "Why do you think I love you?" Are questions that I consistently ask Josh. Today, while we were in line at Fry's Electronics picking up season 5 of the Star Trek: Voyager series, Josh said, "I love you." I in turn asked him, "Why?" His answer was to hold up the season of Star Trek he was holding and say, "Because we can be nerds together."
Since we have been married we have amass several TV series on DVD. We buy them one season at a time usually over a year or so. I bought all 7 seasons of The Road to Avonlea on my own, and I also bought seasons 1-4 of The Cosby Show. Then we bought all 10 seasons of Friends. Josh really liked the Stargate: SG1 series, so we did all 10 seasons along with the 3 DVD movies that ended the series. We are now working on Star Trek: Voyager. We have 5 out of the 7 seasons so far. We plan on getting the entire series of Star Trek: The Next Generation after that. After all of these, who knows?
It is nice to be nerds together and enjoy the same things. You can all make fun of us all you want, but we find any way we can to enjoy each other's company.

Never a Dull Moment
So, yesterday I was 1/2 dead pretty early in the evening and ended up taking a nap off and on until 8:45pm and then Josh and I went out to get supplies for the baby luau before coming back home and really settling down for the night. Josh decided to take a shower before going to bed. I was half asleep when all of sudden I see him staying in front of the HUGE vanity mirror that we have in the master bedroom suite at the Schultz's house. Now he isn't just standing there, but standing there BUTT NAKED looking himself over. This not something he normally does so it woke me up a bit. Then he pats his rear end and says, "I really DON'T have an ass." Now you must remember that I comment on a consistent basis on the lack butt of him and his ENTIRE FAMILY. Not a single person out of the 7 has any kind of rear. It was just funny that it seemed as though it was finally truly sinking in for Mr. Josh.
When we got home from the baby luau and running a few errands, Josh went and turned off the security system and then went straight back to the bathroom. Now remember that we NEVER close our bathroom doors unless there is company over. (You may say yuck - but there it is.) I was laying on the couch (again not totally conscience), when I hear Josh talking to the cat. She has her food/water bowls and litter box in the guest bathroom. What is he saying you ask?? "No, staying over me while I pee will not get you fed any faster." Anyone could give a running commentary on the man; what can I say?

The Cuckoo Clock
So, among the many wonderful things about the Schultz house is their cuckoo clock. They purchased it I think in Sweden (don't quote me) on a summer trip they took a couple of years ago. Now, Bob and Juanita told us before they left that they always forget to set the clock (the same with their grandfather clock), but they also told us that we could set it if we wanted to do so. Yesterday, Josh decided to do just that. He obviously knew what he was doing (although I was FREAKING out, worried that he would break something that special), and all was well. He said that his grandparents had a very similar clock and he had set it numerous times.
So yesterday and today every time it reached the hour Josh stopped whatever he was doing and put up his hands like he was leading music until the chiming was over. The simple pleasures are what life is all about in our household. I love how Josh gets a kick out of cute moments like this. That is my hottie for you.

Josh's One Liners
The other day I had done a few loads of laundry during the day and just put them on the bed. Before we could get into bed that night we had to put everything away (such was my reasoning). As I began to sort and fold, I tried to get Josh motivated to help me and informed him that he was on hang duty (ie - hanging up those clothes that go in the closet). He replied to me without even skipping a beat, "Hang duty? Is that like a dingleberry?" After that we both were a big incoherent as to giggles (me) and chuckles (him), and I gave him a "point" for that one. While I was recounting this with him to recharge my memory to type this entry, he again related how really funny he was on that instance. Humility is NOT a Campbell family trait that I have seen from my limited experiences.
While lying around on a Saturday morning, trying to get together the motivation to get ready for the day trip that we had planned for San Fran, Josh got up and got his "I Love Football" t-shirt on that I had bought him. I asked if he really planned on wearing that since we were going to the bay area (yes I know I am ridiculous). I decided on further contemplation that it was fine, and at least he wasn't planning on wearing his "Deport Pedro" t-shirt that he bought in Salt Lake City, of all places. He first got this huge grin on his face and I realized that I should have kept my mouth shut (a feeling I get on a regular basis). I begged him not to do this stupid thing to which he replied, "You're going to give me candy and then take it away??!!" I am happy to report he stayed in the football shirt so as not to temp the Liberal Gods for we had chosen to dwell on their territory that day.
So I had an awful day at work today, which is a Monday (which makes everything worse because you still have the whole week ahead of you. I hadn't told Josh everything about what had happened, but he knew the jest of the situation. I called him on my way home and he was already home (very unusual) and was "getting me something ready in the kitchen." I came home to a dinner almost completely done. This meal was bbq steak, corn-on-the-cob, homemade potatoes (his 1st try on such), and cold shrimp with cocktail sauce. It was AMAZING! He came a long way from the 1st meal he ever made for me when we were newlyweds (burnt hamburger helper). As he was setting up our plates to eat, he says to me "This is a meal worthy of YOU!" Now by that he did not mean that I deserve wonderful meals 24/7, he meant that the meal was on the same caliber of the meals that I cook for Him. Either way, it was a compliment and I he did his little 5 year old excited voice which made it all the better.

The Actual 4th of July
So, this year the 4th of July was on a Sunday, and lets face it, many Mormons don't know feel guilty if they have a good time on Sunday. Personally, I think that you can honor the Sabbath and enjoy yourself. So many of my friends and family didn't do much of anything on this special day and I think that is sad.
Anyway, we had put our names on the missionary calender a while back because you have to get in your request early for a Sunday for these guys. We had the missionaries over at about 2pm and Josh grilled up some tri-tip that I had marinated in Stub's liquid smoke (the soy sauce in it is made with corn starch). We also made some corn-on-the-cob and I bought some premade potato salad and coleslaw. We also cut up a watermelon and we ate out on the back porch (the Schultz have a table with chairs, bench, and hammock on their covered porch). Josh also picked up some grape soda while we were at the store because he said it wasn't a bbq without soda. It was great and we all had good food and good conversation.
A little later we left for my Uncle Phil/Aunt Nicole's house in Folsom. They are living in a house that my grandparents' own and my grandparents also used to live there when I was a child. So to me, it's "grandma's house." They had almost completely remodeled the whole thing (they even knocked down a wall dividing the living/family rooms). It looked GREAT! It was so great to show Josh the 8 acre yard that I had so many childhood memories of (it is also on a cliff and has a wonderful view). My grandma planted every single tree in the yard about 30 years ago. It was amazing to see this huge redwood that she got from the state fair that was only about 6 inches tall when she got it.
Well, grandma and grandpa were there along with my Aunt and Uncle and my cousins Phoebe, Alexa, and Eric. There was also several people from Aunt Nicole's family there and a friend of Uncle Phil's with his wife and little one. All in all there was about 12 people. It was very low key, just kick back and enjoy. I loved swinging on the porch swing that I enjoyed when I was 8 years old, and reading a book sitting on a lawn chair by the pool.
Uncle Phil grilled up about $100 worth of tri-tip and it was AWESOME! Twice in one day, YA-BABY! There was also great pasta salad and stuffed zucchini that Josh enjoyed but I could not partake. For their corn-on-the-cob they had 3 different types of flavored butters (why have I never done this before??). For dessert, there was a smorgasbord of choices. I went with the vanilla ice cream topped with strawberry preserves that we brought, but Josh couldn't pin himself down and so he had 2 desserts. It was good times.
For the fireworks, Uncle Phil had Josh be his assistant. He set off most of them on a ladder in the road outside the house and we were all sitting on lawn chairs or Grandma and I sat on the tailgate of Josh's Avalanche. My cousins showed me a trick to write with your sparklers on the concrete. I did a smiley face and my initials. It was all a BLAST (pun intended)! Uncle Phil is just so goofy and easy going and Aunt Nicole is an incredible hostess, Josh and I always have a good time with them.
It was everything a holiday should be: loads of good food, good company, fun times, easy going. Can I just press the repeat button please?

Run 4 Independence 2010
I have had the opportunity to do Elk Grove's Run for Independence (to benefit the Elk Grove Food Bank) for the past 3 years now. The 1st year that I did it, the entire Campbell crew joined in. I stayed with Ann and did a strong walk the whole way. Josh stayed with Kyle and they were the slowest of all of us. Robert had recently gotten home from his mission to Indianapolis, IN, and he ended up coming very close to passing out soon after finishing. (I have a good family pic of this event thanks to Zach Taylor, I will try to download it at a later date.)
The next year it was just me and Josh and I did it by ourselves, and got great times. Don't ask me what they were or any details because I don't remember anything else other than that.
Last year, I went with my great running buddy Shannon Beltram and her family. Josh was coming back from scout camp that day, so I didn't want to go it alone. Chad ran it as well and made an AMAZING time. Emily ran/walked it with her sister Jennifer and they came in a few minutes behind myself.
This year, Josh and I had prepped (see my previous posts) and we felt raring to go. Josh didn't want Gus to stay at home in the crate all that morning, so we took him with us in the car with the plan to drop him off at Josh's parents house. Ann had opted out of joining us since Dan was gone at scout camp (the same was true of the previous year), so Josh thought she would be able to keep an eye on him for us. We called her multiple times on her cell and house phone, but to no avail. Josh then asked if I had specifically checked if leashed dogs couldn't be in the race, and I said no, I had just assumed that they couldn't join in the fun.
He then checked the race's website from his blackberry as we drove down the road and what do you know, leashed dogs were allowed. Since we had taken Gus on our training runs that week, and he had participated in the Doggie Dash the previous month we felt confident Gus could handle the pressure.
My results were an improvement on my personal time since the Buzz Oates No Excuses 5K I did on Memorial Day (here I am that day in the pic just beside), but not what I REALLY WANTED. There is always a next time. Josh and Gus sprinted out the last tenth of a mile, so they beat me by about 45 seconds or so.
When we were done I am happy to report that Gus was actually interested in drinking. We can rarely get him to drink from anything beside his or Max's (Ann and Dan's dog) water bowl. He chugged right out of the water bottle from Josh which he has NEVER done before. Guess he was thirsty. He did not seem tired until we bedded him down over an hour later while we ran some errands. We were both impressed with how well he did weaving in and out amongst the runners/walkers and staying focused on the task at hand.
This all technically did not happen on the 4th of July since it fell on a Sunday this year and the Elk Grove Stake gives most of the volunteering force for the race. They chose to do it on Saturday instead. That is probably why the turnout was HORRIBLE. We had fun though. We even had one of the onlookers around mile 2.5 cheer us on as "Go little family!" It was very cute.

Drive-in Once Again
So we went to the drive-in once again last Saturday. Josh had to help do a flag ceremony for the ward's Independence Day BBQ, but after the ceremony was over we ditched the party and headed out. (Don't think to harshly of us; I can NEVER eat 90% of what is served at ward functions, and sometimes that can be a bit depressing.)
Anyway, we went and saw "Grown Ups", which we both agreed was extremely entertaining, pretty clean (considering all the main male characters), yet very choppy. It also didn't really have much conflict to speak of in the story line, but for a good laugh alone it worked.
I had this big plan to creep over to another screen for the second showing to see "Letters to Juliet," and I told Josh if he agreed he was welcome to sleep or make fun of the sappiness, whichever worked for him. Unfortunately, the movie we came for was playing on a completely separate screen and the ticket teller said we couldn't come around through the entrance. So sad! "Eclipse" was playing after "Letters to Juliet" on the same screen, so I figured I would let Josh sleep through it or suck him into it, but my plans were thwarted. Ah well.
We headed home after the 1st showing, AGAIN, but we made a commitment to ourselves that we will stay through all 3 showings before the summer has ended. I guess it will have to be after Josh gets a new battery though because his died before the movie even began and we had to ask the Escape next to us to give us a jump. We also had to turn the truck on about 4 times during the movie so it wouldn't die a second time. Such is life.

We brought Gus with us this time around though. He did so good throughout the entire film. We had arrived about an hour and a half early, and it is a good thing we did considering how packed it got. We picked up some dinner on the way, and I brought some treats and books for each of us, so it worked out great. The drive-in is really becoming our new favorite place in Sacramento.
